Blue cloth with black titles to upper board and gilt titles to spine. Alfred Edward Woodley Mason (1865–1948) , was an English novelist. This, his most famous book, combining excitement with careful character analysis, represents a new development in his and indeed most other popular fiction, which had hitherto so often been content with simple characterization, the whole interest being focused on the action.
